Gilad Shalit and His Army Unit Visit the Aleph Learning Centre at HGSS

Gilad Shalit and 14 other Israeli soldiers from his unit recently joined the Hampstead Garden Suburb US community for a weekend.

On the Sunday, Gilad and the soldiers attended the Aleph Learning Centre Cheder that takes place in HGSS. The soldiers were given a tour of the Cheder and were able to speak to the children and see what they were learning about in Judaism and how they are taught to read Hebrew. In preparation for the visit, the Cheder children learnt about Israel and its special contribution to the world.

After the tour, the older children from the Cheder, and 24 children from Tribe’s Challenge programme, joined the soldiers for an interactive take on ‘Who wants to be a millionaire’, the pupils were tested on their knowledge of Israel, and the soldiers were quizzed about the UK. Following this, the soldiers bought out their guitars and sang Israeli songs with the children.  They also each received an Aleph Learning Centre Kippah.

Chayli Fehler, Director of the Aleph Learning Centre commented: “We were privileged to have Gilad Shalit and his unit visit our Aleph Learning Centre. It was a great opportunity for the pupils to personally meet the soldiers and interact with them. It strengthens their Jewish Identity and connection to Israel”
