It has been a week of landmark announcements, appointments and anniversaries at the United Synagogue.
Community News:
Barnet United Synagogue held a celebration in honour of their community’s 65th anniversary; Golders Green United Synagogue celebrated 10 years since the appointment of Rabbi Harvey Belovski as Senior Rabbi and for the first time in the history of the United Synagogue we have our first female chair, Karen Appleby, who was recently elected at St Albans US. The results of the rest of our communities’ AGMs will be announced shortly and there could still be more women elected to the highest positions at their shuls. Good luck to all of the candidates.
Tribe News:
Tribe took over 150 members for a thrilling day out to Alton Towers and Chessington theme parks on Lag B’Omer and a Tribe Rabbi has been appointed to work with the community and youth in Glasgow. We wish Rabbi Eliezer Wolfson and his family much success in his new role.
Yom Yerushalayim:
Yom Yerushalayim, this year on 8th May, marks the anniversary of the capture and reunification of Jerusalem during the six-day war. After almost 20 years, Jews were once again able to pray at the Kotel and this is something truly worth celebrating. Chief Rabbi Elect Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis has written an emotive piece on Yom Yerushalayim and we have other Jerusalem related articles including a stirring case against the division of Jerusalem by Rabbi Dr Jeffrey Cohen, former Rabbi of Stanmore & Canons Park United Synagogue and Jerusalem: Peace and Beauty. We also have a fascinating article about the Israeli National Anthem, HaTikvah (‘The Hope’) by our Rabbi in Israel, Gideon Sylvester.
Feature - Meet Ted Baker:
Did you know that Ted happens to be a member of the United Synagogue? Did you know that Ted Baker is actually not a real person? You & US decided to find out more.
Women’s View:
This month’s edition includes news on the US Women’s Annual dinner, honouring Lady Sacks, which took place on Wednesday; a look at life as a Rebbetzen by Anna Bergson and a fascinating feature on the ‘World Of A Female Jewish Artist’ by Beverley-Jane Stewart.
